What keeps a crew alive in How to Fish?
Your hunger bar drains constantly and drains faster while sprinting, reeling and fighting. Every fish you catch is potential food, but raw fish restore very little — the grill is where the value is. The rhythm that works: fish in bursts of 3–4 casts, then hand the haul to whoever owns the stove. A crew that grills in batches never thinks about hunger again; a crew that grills one fish at a time is always one wave away from starving mid-fight.
How does the grill rotation work?
Four habits cover it. Get them right and hunger stops being a mechanic you think about:
- One person owns the stove. Usually the Chef, but on a duo run just pick whoever reels worse. The four co-op crew roles exist exactly for this split.
- Grill in batches of four. The stove fits four fillets; starting a batch for one fish wastes the cycle.
- Flip at the sizzle change. Burnt fish restore half the hunger. There is no achievement for charcoal.
- Seagulls target active grills. If a raid alarm sounds mid-batch, someone covers the stove or the batch becomes bird food.
When do fish bite — day, night and storms?
Fish bite on loose cycles that change per island. Days favor surface schoolers like sardines and mackerel; nights wake up the glow-feeders (anglerfish, and on later islands, the fish you actually came for). The mistake almost every new crew makes is treating night as downtime — it’s the highest-value fishing window if your lure box has a glow rig in it.
- Dawn/dusk — best raw catch rate for income fish. Sell first, upgrade second.
- Night — rare species window. Bring glow lures and a flashlight for the deck.
- Storms — bites drop to near zero. Use storms to reorganize the tackle box, cook, and plan routes.
The full species-by-timeslot pairing is in the fishipedia.
Which mistakes end runs?
Three, and they are all shopping mistakes rather than fishing mistakes:
- Buying weapons before a grill upgrade. The second grill slot pays for itself within a day of game time; the second gun does not. The arsenal & lures guide has the full upgrade order.
- Parking the boat on the school. Propeller noise scatters fish — idle in neutral about two boat-lengths off the spot and cast in.
- Fighting hunger with dynamite. Blowing up a school does kill fish, and about a third of them are even recoverable. It is never the right trade.
What is a good first-day script?
Catch, cook, sell, upgrade — in that order, one purchase at a time:
- Cast the basic rod at the nearest school and catch until the grill is full.
- Cook everything, eat to full, sell the surplus at the dock.
- Buy the bright spinner lure before any weapon. It doubles your bite rate on mackerel.
- Upgrade the grill slot with the second payout.
- Only then look at the shotgun — you’ll want it for the Swarm.
That’s the whole economy of the early game: catch → cook → sell → one upgrade at a time. Everything else in this guide library is just this loop with bigger numbers — the island walkthrough is where the numbers start climbing.
