Co-op Crew Roles — Chef, Angler, Gunner & Captain Guide
The four How to Fish co-op roles explained: what the Chef, Angler, Gunner and Captain each own, the duties that matter, and the crew tips from a thousand wipes.
What are the four co-op roles in How to Fish?
A crew that assigns roles before the first cast stops tripping over itself by Island 2. Each role owns one system on the boat — food, fish, guns or money — and every boss fight in the game tests at least one of them. Since patch 1.0.5 roles persist between sessions, so set them once and let the muscle memory build.
🧑🍳 The Chef — owns the grill and the grocery run
The least glamorous job and the one that decides the most voyages.
- Keeps the hunger bar of the whole crew fed
- Fillets & grills during boss downtime
- Guards the stove from seagull heists
The full kitchen system — recipes, batch rotation and the seagull counters — is in the cooking & recipes guide.
🎣 The Angler — keeps the lines wet, always
The money maker, and the role that turns the fishipedia into income.
- Matches lures to the species table
- Farms flying fish for trick-shot payouts
- Reports hotspot zones to the crew
Which lure gets which bite is the fishipedia’s whole job; the night-cycle windows are in Survival 101.
🔫 The Gunner — crowd control with a shotgun
Every swarm wave and every mid-air payout runs through this role.
- Deletes leech swarms before they board
- Lands 360 trick shots for 5× payouts
- Peels predators off the Chef
The trick-shot economy (and why dynamite never qualifies) is in Weapons & Money 101; the swarm answers live in the arsenal guide.
🧭 The Captain — drives, banks and decides
The role that says “no” so the crew can afford to say “yes” later.
- Holds the purse & plans upgrades
- Picks routes between hotspot zones
- Calls the retreat when dynamite is out
Crew tips from a thousand wipes
Six habits that separate crews who clear Island 5 from crews who fund it:
- 🍳 Chef: The grill outranks the gun. A second grill slot pays for itself within a day — your second SMG never will.
- 🎣 Angler: Cast in neutral. Prop noise scatters schools faster than dynamite does, and dynamite is at least fun.
- 🎯 Gunner: Two misses per school, then move. Patience is a resource with a price tag.
- 🧭 Captain: Chips never convert back to dollars. Budget them like they are already gone — because they are.
- 📦 Chef: One cooked stack in the pantry, always. Hunger does not schedule itself around boss fights.
- 🌙 Angler: Night is not downtime. It is when the expensive fish forget the boat exists.
Solo player? You’re all four at once — the achievement hunt notes which checks (Lone Wave, Deckhand) assume a crew, and the island walkthrough marks where a 3–4 person lobby makes the biggest difference.
