Reef Tyrant Boss Guide — Armor Plates, Harpoon Pins & Loot

How to beat the Reef Tyrant in How to Fish: the armor-plate phase, the eight-second harpoon pin window, the rampage phase, and the harpoon refill farm route.

How do you beat the Reef Tyrant?

The Tyrant patrols the coral shelf in armored loops, and the fight is a direct exam on your shopping history: no harpoon gun, no damage. Phase one is a pin-and-burst rotation on its armor plates; phase two sheds the armor and becomes a mobile line-snapping chase that steel leader and reverse-idling answer. Miss the pin window and you wait a full loop for the next one.

Phase 1 — Plates

Front armor shrugs off bullets entirely. The harpoon gun’s single charge pins a plate open for eight seconds — that window is your only real damage. Miss the pin and you spend the loop waiting for the next one. Miss two and the Tyrant wrecks the deck rail, which repairs out of your pocket.

The gun itself is a $950 dock purchase — the arsenal upgrade order puts it right after the golden hook, and the island walkthrough marks Island 4 as where the bill comes due.

Phase 2 — Rampage

Below half health the plates shed and it goes mobile: circling passes that snap lines. Steel leader is mandatory, and the boat should idle in reverse the whole phase — it can’t corner as tight as you can.

Why fight it more than once?

The drop that matters is the harpoon charge refill — from Island 4 onward you’ll want a full harpoon for every voyage, so this fight is on the weekly chore list whether you like it or not. Plan the refills between high-roller trophy runs rather than mid-voyage.

Where does this fight sit in the gauntlet?

It’s the gear-order check of the four: the Leech Matriarch tested coordination, Pufferfish Prime tested dynamite discipline, and the Golden Leviathan tests greed — with a stop for jellyfish patrol on the way.
