Cooking & Recipes — The Full Grill Book for How to Fish
The full How to Fish recipe book: every grill recipe with ingredients and effects, hunger math, the batch rotation, and how to win the seagull wars.
How does the hunger loop work?
Your hunger bar drains constantly and drains faster while sprinting, reeling and fighting. Raw fish restore very little — the grill is where the value is. The rhythm that works: fish in bursts of 3–4 casts, then hand the haul to whoever owns the stove. A crew that grills in batches never thinks about hunger again; a crew that grills one fish at a time is always one wave away from starving mid-fight.
On Easy the drain is gentle enough that solo grazing works. On Hard the drain runs roughly a third faster and sprinting genuinely costs — the herring rations stack stops being optional the moment you leave Island 2.
What is the full recipe book?
Eight recipes, unlocked by catching their ingredients — the game never explains this, which is why half the community thinks the grill only makes “grilled fish”. It doesn’t.
| Recipe | Ingredients | Effect | Field note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grilled Sardine | 2× sardine | Small hunger refill | The bread and butter. Batch four at a time. |
| Crispy Mackerel | 2× mackerel | Medium refill + stamina tick | First recipe that justifies the second grill slot. |
| Herring Rations | 4× herring | Four-stack, slow eat | Boss-fight picnic basket. Cook before you sail. |
| Eel Skewer | 1× electric eel | Hunger drains 20% slower, 10 min | Handle with the insulated glove or the Chef learns lightning. |
| Piranha Ceviche | 3× piranha | Big stamina spike, tiny HP nibble | The nibble is flavor. Allegedly. |
| Shark Kebab | 1× reef shark steak | Full bar + brief “fearless” | Leeches ignore you for ten seconds. Use them well. |
| Urchin Sushi | 1× drippy urchin | Medium refill | Feeds less than it earns. A flex, not a meal plan. |
| Golden Tartare | 1× golden sardine | 24h hunger lock | Also unlocks the “Waste of Money” achievement. Worth it. |
Where the ingredients live and which lure gets the bite: the fishipedia. What the buffed payouts are worth at the counter: Casino Economics.
What is the grill rotation?
Four rules, and the first one is a staffing decision:
- One person owns the stove. Usually the Chef, but on a duo run just pick whoever reels worse — the crew roles guide explains why the Chef outranks the Gunner.
- Grill in batches of four. The stove fits four fillets; starting a batch for one fish wastes the cycle.
- Flip at the sizzle change. Burnt fish restore half the hunger. There is no achievement for charcoal.
- Cook for the next island, not this one. Rations stack, hunger doesn’t wait for the loading screen.
How do you win the seagull wars?
Seagulls target active grills — the fuller the batch, the harder they commit. A raid plays out in three beats: the cry (about two seconds of warning), the dive, and the heist. The counters, in order of effectiveness:
- Slam the pot lid on. The lid blocks a dive entirely; it costs one flip’s timing.
- One warning shot — the shotgun scatters the flock for the rest of the day cycle. Costs shells; buys peace.
- The scarecrow decoy — a dock purchase nobody recommends until their third stolen batch.
Since patch 1.0.4, raid timing pauses while players are in menus — the birds got polite, not harmless (patch history is in the patch notes roundup). If you hear the cry mid-boss, let the batch burn: losing four fillets loses less than dropping Pufferfish Prime’s line.
What is pantry doctrine?
Three habits that decide more voyages than any gun purchase:
- One cooked stack, always. The hunger blackout doesn’t kill you — it drifts the boat, and the drift has a bad habit of ending inside Island 3 territory.
- Rations before bosses. Four herring rations feed a crew through any fight in the game.
- Cook the cheap stuff, sell the expensive stuff. Urchin sushi is a flex; grilled sardines are a strategy.
That’s the whole kitchen. It is the least glamorous system on the boat and the one that decides the most voyages — which is exactly why the Chef role outranks the Gunner in every serious lobby.
